As a dynamic organisation, Babcock Rail required a mobile platform that their field engineers and office staff could utilise, improving business processes and communication methods. Fundamentally the application would be a replacement to the current paper based system.
As the mobile application was to be used in a relatively harsh working environment, it was important to develop a platform that was not only extremely reliable in its operation but also inherently usable to the operators. A highly customised man-machine interface (MMI) was developed specifically with the end user in mind and supports a number of innovative data entry features for quick, easy and accurate data capture.
The hardware employed combines the latest in touch-screen mobile PC hardware and is supported by integrated 3G / GRPS communications.
The solution comprises not only the mobile application, which runs on the mobile hardware, but Etellect also developed a fully integrated web based server application to support the fully autonomous operation of the mobile application. This application combines fully integrated XML Web Service based integrated communications with the tablet application but also integrates with third party applications via remote data transfer. The server application can manage multiple simultaneous communications with any number of mobile units and track the status of the jobs at any instant in time. Essentially the application provides real-time management of all jobs in the field and can be controlled via an online web based interface from any location.
